The Economic Development Team at the GDHCC is very excited about the installation ceremony of our new president and CEO, Ricardo Ortiz, and the 2012 Board of Directors this Wednesday, February 29th, at the Meyerson Symphony Center. Hundreds of attendees, including public officials, corporate partners, community leaders and entrepreneurs will gather to hear Mr. Ortiz’s vision for the organization. If you are a business owner in Dallas, this is an event that you shouldn’t miss. Why? In addition to learning about the GDHCC’s priorities, you have the opportunity to grow your business through networking with an incredibly diverse group of movers and shakers. And the event is free and open to the public. RSVP here!
Effective networking comes with practice and this skill is vital for any entrepreneur. The ability to effectively communicate your business idea is worth its weight in gold– we all know word-of-mouth is the most efficient way of growing your business. So get your business cards ready, and try these five tips at the Meyerson this Wednesday:
1. Shake hands and don’t look down! A common tendency in the act of handshaking is watching the other person’s hand to make sure a proper shake occurs. Don’t do it! Trust me, your hands will meet if you maintain eye contact with your network-ee. Maintaining eye contact implies confidence in yourself and your business. Looking down doesn’t. So keep your head up, smile, and shake hands with confidence.
2. Listen as much (or more) than you speak. It’s not all about you. Networking is a dance. It’s about give and take. You should be equally interested in what the other person has to say as you are with your 30-second pitch. So listen to that other person as much as you want them to listen to you. If you are thinking about the next thing that you’d like to say in the exchange instead of really listening to that other person, it will show, and the opportunity might be lost.
3. Try to use the other person’s name at least twice in your exchange. The first time is the easiest: immediately repeat the person’s name aloud when the person introduces his/herself. Keep that person’s name in your head throughout the exchange, and make sure you close with, “It was a pleasure meeting you, , and I look forward to being in touch with you.”
4. Remember to smile! It may seem obvious, but people who smile, who really embrace the moment, exude confidence and are far more likely to create meaningful business relationships. So get into it and enjoy yourself!
5. Be relevant and engaging. Most networking events have some sort of presentation/speech/attraction before breaking out into networking. This Wednesday’s event is no different. My advice is to really listen to Mr. Ortiz’s speech, and don’t be afraid to discuss a few things that really hit home for you when networking. Use these five tips, and networking, a critical skill for any business owner, will be that much easier.
